Zodiac Episode is live!

Zodiac Killer in popular culture - Wikipedia

The team at That’s Strange sits down to discuss the horrifying and almost unbelievable story of the Zodiac Killer. Come with us back to the Bay Area in the late 60’s and early 70’s as we breakdown all the nefarious acts committed by the still unknown killer. The Zodiac tormented the San Francisco area with his violent crimes and constant taunting of those trying to catch him. Sending letters to police, media, and even a local lawyer one thing is for sure, the Zodiac craved attention. He went above and beyond to terrify the community. From his horrific murders to the way he taunted police in the letters and ciphers he would send during his active years. You can see all the letters that Zodiac sent here. Sifting throughout the various forms of communication he used will put you in the mind of the killer. While his crimes have become infamous, the Zodiac case remains unsolved. Thousands of suspects were under suspicion while many of them fizzled out, a few remain in the limelight of the Zodiac case. Below you can see some of the suspects that we either didn’t cover or covered briefly.

  • Ross Sullivan became a person of interest through the possible link between the Zodiac Killer and the murder of Cheri Jo Bates in Riverside. Sullivan was a library assistant at Riverside City College and was suspected by colleagues who said that he went missing for several days after the murder. Sullivan resembled sketches of the Zodiac and wore military-style boots like the footprints found at the Lake Berryessa crime scene. Sullivan was hospitalized multiple times for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
  • Kathleen Johns, who claimed to have been abducted by the Zodiac Killer, later recognized U.S. Navy veteran Lawrence Kane in a photo lineup. Patrol officer Don Fouke, who possibly observed the Zodiac Killer following the murder of Paul Stine, said that Kane closely resembled the man he and Eric Zelms encountered. Kane worked at the same Nevada hotel as possible Zodiac victim Donna Lass. Kane was diagnosed with impulse-control disorder after suffering brain injuries in a 1962 accident. He was arrested for voyeurism and prowling.
  • Police informants accused U.S. Navy veteran Richard Reed Marshall (born Joe Don Dickey) of being the Zodiac Killer, claiming that he privately hinted at being a murderer. Marshall lived in Riverside in 1966 and San Francisco in 1969, close to the scenes of the Bates and Stine murders. He was a silent film enthusiast and projectionist, screening Segundo de Chomón’s The Red Phantom (1907), a name used by the author of a possible 1974 Zodiac letter. Detective Ken Narlow said that “Marshall makes good reading but [is] not a very good suspect in my estimation.”
  • Ted Kaczynski, also known as the Unabomber, was investigated for possible connections to the Zodiac Killer in 1996. Kaczynski worked in northern California at the time of the Zodiac murders, and like the Zodiac had an interest in cryptography and threatened the press into publishing his communications.[98] Kaczynski was ruled out by both the FBI and SFPD based on fingerprint and handwriting comparison, and by his absence from California on certain dates of known Zodiac activity.
  • Bruce Davis, a member of Charles Manson’s Manson Family cult and a convicted murderer, was investigated, but no evidence linking him to the Zodiac murders was discovered. A 1970 report by the California Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation stated that all male members of the Manson Family had been investigated and eliminated as Zodiac suspects.
  • In 2007, a man named Dennis Kaufman claimed that his stepfather Jack Tarrance was the Zodiac. Kaufman turned several items over to the FBI including a hood similar to the one worn by the Zodiac. According to news sources, DNA analysis conducted by the FBI on the items was deemed inconclusive in 2010.
  • In 2014, Gary Stewart published a book, The Most Dangerous Animal of All, in which he claimed his search for his biological father, Earl Van Best, Jr., led him to conclude Van Best was the Zodiac Killer. In 2020, the book was adapted for FX Network as a documentary series.

We hope you all enjoy this episode on the Zodiac killer. The case remains unsolved to this day. You can head over to to keep up to date on everything we have coming up!

Origins of Pizzagate

In October of 2016 a twitter account posted a claim that the New York City Police Department had uncovered a pedophilia ring with links to the Democratic party while combing through Anthony Weiners emails. Throughout the remainder of October and into November, WikiLeaks, an international non-profit organization that publishes news leaks, published emails acquired from a data breach from former White house Chief of Staff John Podesta. Advocates of the theory began to discover what they believed to be code words for pedophilia and human trafficking. Also claiming that a popular pizzeria in Washington DC was a meeting ground for this elite ring.

The story began spreading throughout the internet. Supposed “Fake news sites” began reporting the findings to the masses. The Conservative Daily Post, a not so reputable website, ran a headline claiming that the Federal Bureau of investigation had confirmed the theory. As you guys have learned, along with us l, that if something gets on the internet that is absolutely false…it doesn’t really matter.

The claims began spreading to mainstream media mere days before the 2016 presidential election after a Reddit user posted a Pizzagate “evidence” document claiming the weird happenings at the popular DC pizzeria.

“Everyone associated with the business is making semi-overt, semi-tongue-in-cheek, and semi-sarcastic inferences towards sex with minors. The artists that work for and with the business also generate nothing but cultish imagery of disembodiment, blood, beheadings, sex, and of course pizza.”

The theory began spreading throughout the internet to websites like InfoWars, Planet Free Will, and other “alt right” websites. Subreddit Pizzagate was created to further research the claims before being removed by Reddit on November 23rd of 2016.

Powerful Owner of a Pizzeria Begins to Raise Questions

In 2012 the owner of the pizzeria associated with the Pizzagate scandal was named as one of the 50 most powerful people in Washington DC by GQ magazine. How is it possible that the owner of a quiet family restaurant was named as one of the most powerful people in an area full of the most powerful people in the country? The owners close relationship with Tony Podesta, who has strong ties to convicted pedophile Dennis Hastert, began to raise questions. Hastert became the highest-ranking elected official in U.S. History to have served a prison sentence when he was convicted of child molestation charges in 2015. Couple that with bizarre imagery on the pizzeria owners social media account and eye brows started to rise.

Many proponents of Pizzagate began to untangle the thick webs surrounding The pizzeria owner, Tony and John Podesta, and the Democratic party. Coming across bizarre imagery and artwork collected by Tony Imagery showing young children in their underwear with their hands behind their backs, children hanging from a wall by a rope under their armpits, along with bizarre creatures laying in bed with children.

The artwork by Patricia Piccinini being the most bizarre of the bunch, showed disturbing looking creatures laying with or standing with children in bed. A vast majority of the artwork collected by the pedestas show some form of children in downright sick positions.

The pizzeria owners instagram page is filled with very disgusting imagery and bizarrely used hash tags. A large amount of the photos shared by the owner are of children that he claims to have taken from other social media pages. With hashtags that some have tied to code wording used by pedophiles.

Whether or not the artwork and social media posts are simple pieces of art that are being misinterpreted or something far more sinister has not been decided by us. We can agree that a good portion of them should raise some questions towards the motives of the Podestas and Pizzeria owners however.

The image shared by the owner of a little girl who he claims is his god daughter with her arms taped to a table is one that seemingly should not have any normal explanation. Searching through the imagery shown on his social media account even more twisted imagery is shown. Some by people who are tagged as being at the pizzeria in question.

Pornographic images with pizza slices inserted into them are posted by one user while at the popular DC pizzeria. The imagery with ties to the DC business are almost endless and seemingly increase in the disturbing imagery they show. Is it possible that these people are literally hiding in plain sight?

The growth of the theory on the internet, along with the bizarre imagery shown on the owners social media accounts, caused harassment towards the owner and employees of the pizzeria. The owner told the New York Times “ From this insane, fabricated conspiracy theory, we’ve come under constant assault. Ive done nothing for days but try to clean this up and protect my staff and friends from being terrorized.”

In December of 2016, Edgar Maddison Welch, a 28 year old from North Carolina showed up at the pizzeria and fired three shots from an AR-15 rifle striking the walls, a desk, and a door in the establishment. He surrendered to police without incident and stated he came to self investigate the conspiracy theory.

Many of what we’ve discussed can be shown in deeper detail in the documentary Pedogate by Mouthy Buddha. Deeply diving into the specifics of the allegations.

Clinton and Podesta emails begin to possibly tie back to Pizzagate

After the breach of John Podestas emails and their subsequent leak by Wikileaks many people began finding bizarrely worded emails peppered throughout. Some proponents of the pizza gate theory believed these emails were in code and were referring to pedophilia. Using words the FBI had released as being associated with pedophilia in sentences that really made no logical sense. With the Hillary Clintons email scandal out in the open as well was something far more sinister than simple classified information being on public servers at hand? Why did Clinton go to the extent she did to delete these emails?

An email leaked from WikiLeaks to John Podesta from the “Sandler foundation” read as follows:

Hi John,

The realtor found a handkerchief (I think it has a map that seems pizza-related. Is it yours? They can send it if you want. i Know you’re busy, so feel free not to respond if its not yours or you don’t want it.

Susan & Herb

I just came from checking the Field house and I have a square cloth handkerchief (white w/ black) that was left on the kitchen island.

Happy to send it via the mail if you let me know where i should send it.

The emails only get more bizarre from here with these following examples. Next to the quotes are the Wikileaks ID code links where you can find the full email to read.

“I’m dreaming of your hot dog stand in Hawaii…” ID 30231

“Do you think ill do better playing dominos on cheese than on pasta?” ID 30613

“Would love to get pizza for an hour?” ID 26345

“Still in torture chamber” with a subject line of “Last night was fun” ID 56492

pizza.jpg image showing little girl eating pizza with body that reads “As John said, it doesn’t get any better than this” ID 10037

Hillary emailed Obama stating “When we began the pizza arrangement i thought we were going to be more careful than this. Operating from the whitehouse (SIC) is not what I originally had in mind. Remember the hotdogs can come but if you make a spectacle out of it, that will be our downfall. Please know that i am speaking as a friend. You are the president and can do as you like but i have to say i think it would be wiser to restrict this activity to our predetermined locations. Let me know what everyone thinks. We can vote on it if you’d like.

Is Jeffery Epstein the end of a dark twisted story or just the tip of the iceberg? How is it possible that he had an entire island dedicated to pedophilia? With recorded flight logs to the island of some of the biggest names in Hollywood and politics?

You can give the benefit of the doubt to the people who are on there once. Maybe they truly didn’t know what went on at that island. But the names that are on their multiple times do not get that same benefit.

It undeniable that some of the people you hold in high regard have either been mentioned in this episode or on Epsteins flight log. But it’s important to to not let your emotions get in the way. Sometimes people have a very strong core belief system. When evidence is presented that works against that belief, the new evidence will not be accepted. Creating a very uncomfortable feeling known as cognitive dissonance. Because its important to protect their core beliefs the new evidence is rationalized, ignored, or outright denied.

Season Finale Mothman is Live!

The Mothman Legacy Documentary Trailer Brings the Legend Home This Halloween

We are thrilled to reveal our season finale on Mothman! Rounding out our season with another folklore creature seemed like the perfect cap to an amazing season! We couldn’t be more happy with the support that we have gotten since first starting That’s Strange. Unlike most season breaks, we will only be gone for a short break. We have exciting news coming soon as far as the future of That’s Strange. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. We hope you enjoy the Mothman episode! Mothman was one of the most interesting topics to research because of the fact that his sightings were so rare. Unlike Bigfoot, loch ness, or any other creature, his sightings were all within a year. While many believe to have seen him outside of the West Virginia area, the original sightings are what build this folklore. Stay tuned to our Facebook on updates on season 2 and the exciting news we will have in the coming weeks! If you’re having trouble finding us anywhere head over to our Linktree for all our different links! Thank you all again for the amazing response to our first season and we are going to continue this momentum into season 2 and beyond! We will see you all real soon!
